2012 Dish Systems $1000 Essay Scholarship

Dish Systems is proud to announce our second annual Essay Scholarship for 2012! We hope applicants from our first annual scholarship enjoyed participating as much as we enjoyed reading the hundreds of wonderful entries we received. We hope to see many more student participants for our 2012 scholarship! Be sure to read the rules and submission details carefully before entering.

The Essay Scholarship is Dish Systems’ way of helping one promising student on his or her journey through higher education. We will proudly award the $1000 scholarship to one qualifying graduating senior high school student or non-graduating college student with the most provocative and well-written essay as judged by members of our staff.

Rules:

    • Open only to college-bound graduating high school seniors and non-graduating students currently enrolled in college (U.S. students only).
    • One entry per student. Attempts at multiple essay entries or invalid information will result in disqualification.
    • Plagiarism on any part of an essay will result in immediate disqualification. So don’t do it.
    • See official rules and disclaimers below*

How to Win:

  • Write a 500 word minimum essay on one (1) of the topics below. Writing more than the minimum requirement does not necessarily increase your chances!

    1. Communications satellites, video conferencing, telecommunications and other technologies were pure sci-fi fantasy in 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968. What do you expect to see in the near future that will affect TV technology? What are the various technologies available today that allow more people to experience programs that were once only seen on television sets?

    2. The advent of the internet has changed the way we receive news and entertainment. Do you believe broadcast news and entertainment programs on television have been jeopardized due to the internet’s instant capabilities? Why or why not?

    3. Give us your take on the quality of TV programming today. Is it more of the same since you started watching or has there been a shift in the way shows are made today? How has it changed, if at all, since you’ve been watching?

    4. There are countless numbers of television channels in the United States alone. If you were the executive of a TV network, what kind of programming would you create and why? Does your network aim to entertain, inform, or inspire?

    5. With the 2012 Presidential Election just around the corner, do you think television—from outspoken political news programs to presidential debates—is still a major influential factor in presidential campaigns? Or is the internet a much more powerful medium in determining how people will vote considering, for example, all major candidates, political critics, and news organizations have taken to social networking sites such as Twitter to report and connect with voters?

  • Submit your essays by March 1st, 2012 before 5 p.m. PST
  • Essays will be graded based on correct grammar usage and execution of ideas on the student’s topic of choice.

Email your essays to scholarships@dish-systems.com attached as a Microsoft Word document (for PC users) or as a .doc file on TextEdit (for Mac users). Please name your document file with your first and last name. For example, firstname_lastname.doc.

In the email, include your:

Name
Address
Phone Number
High School Name, City and State
College You’re Attending, Plan to Attend or Have Applied For

The recipient of the scholarship will be chosen and notified directly by the end of April, 2012, and announced on this page.

Good luck to all student participants!
